Christmas
A new creation
by Fr Paul Devitt Fr Paul Devitt

God has been in every atom of creation since the beginning of time. At Christmas we celebrate the revelation of God in the person of Jesus and recognise that God-is-with-us, always has been, always will be.

From the time of Jesus’ entry into this world, nothing could be the same. As St John points out, the presence of the Word made flesh is the beginning of a new creation, the reign of God’s love.

Jesus reveals God as the God who is unconditional, compassionate Love.

Jesus also reveals what the perfect response to God’s love looks like.

His coming to serve and not to be served, of giving his whole life so that all may live, is the example he sets before us as the genuine response to the love that God offers us.

The birth of Jesus draws us ever more deeply into the mystery of the Trinity. The mystery unfolds as we grow in realisation of how much we are loved by God. The unfolding is lifelong, only coming to completion when we meet God face to face.

Meanwhile we have questions to answer: how do I best respond to this love that I experience? How do I follow Jesus’ example of living a life of unselfish love and self-giving to give life to the people and creatures that I share this world with? How do I listen to God-with-us so I can clearly proclaim the good news of God’s unconditional, compassionate love to others?

God is always with us, loving us into who we are called to be. But God never shies away from challenging us to make those changes in our lives that enable us to be ‘proclaimers of love.’ The Eucharist is the bread of life that transforms us into the body of Christ and enables us to become more like him in word and deed.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful
Enkindle in us the fire of Your love.
Send forth Your Spirit
And we shall be created
And You will renew the face of the earth.

  • Doing both!

Rebuild My Church

Rebuild My Church is a diocesan-wide process leading to a Parish Assembly in 2026. Walking together in faith and mission, the initiative invites every parishioner to take part in renewing the life of the Church through participation, communion, and mission.

Thank You 🙏

‘Thank you’ - two little words that convey a depth of gratitude that is beyond words.

Thank you for the warm welcome into the parish communities of Mudgee, Gulgong and Kandos/Rylstone. The mid-year transition from one combination of parishes into three other parish communities brings its own unique set of challenges in balancing out the commitments already in one place, take on the commitments already in train in the new communities and still fulfil all the commitments involved in my roles as Vicar General and Vicar for Education.

You have all been very generous and tolerant with me as I learn the new ropes in Mudgee, Gulgong and Kandos/Rylstone. Thank you very much. It is greatly appreciated.

I am deeply grateful to all the people who give so generously of their time and talents to ensure that our Parish communities witness to the message of Jesus and the Reign of Love that he proclaimed. In so many ways your words and actions bring awareness of God’s presence and love to the people in this part of God’s vineyard where we live and work.

Thanks to all of you who have worked together to keep our ministry of service going in so many ways. As church, our task is to serve the communities in which we live. Again and again, we see that service offered to our local communities. Through numerous appeals and actions, we have reached out to serve those needing assistance in our broader diocesan, state, national and international communities. Special thanks to those who keep the parish operating as a vital witness to God’s Grace – Kristie and Krista in the Parish Office, the Parish Pastoral and Finance Committee members, the teachers, ancillary staff & volunteers in our Parish schools, the catechists in our public schools, the St. Vincent de Paul Society members.

Special thanks to all those volunteers who give so selflessly of your time, energy and expertise. Your contribution is vital to the life of the parishes and the extension of God’s healing and loving touch to the people you visit and care for.

Thanks to those who enhance our worship of God – the Sacristans and church decorators, the Sacramental team, the Musicians and choirs, the Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Commentators, Church cleaners.

Thanks to Father Garry who is ever willing to support me with friendship, advice, and offering to celebrate Masses when my various Diocesan commitments take me away from the parishes. Thanks to Deacon Charles who cares for the pastoral needs of Kandos/Rylstone parishioners and is willing to cover in the other parishes when needed.

Thanks to those who nurture the faith and prayer life of the parish communities of Gulgong and Kandos/Rylstone when priests are not available for Mass in those centres.

Christmas isn’t a happy time for everyone, especially those who have lost loved ones during the year, and those confronted by serious illness (be it your own or that of someone close to you). We can’t take away your pain, but we acknowledge it and assure you of special prayers during this season.

Blessings for 2026. God bless all our endeavours as we are guided by the Holy Spirit to bring God’s love to everyone we meet at each moment on our journey.
